Future Generations and Governance for Sustainable Development: some initiatives in the UK and beyond

The idea of Sustainable Development is based in part on a commitment by the present generation to future generations, ensuring that the latter can continue to meet their needs from the Earth's resources. But how far into the future does this commitment reach, and what force does it have? How might we represent the interests of unborn people in our arrangements for governance of sustainable development? This seminar will outline and explore the issues arising from a number of recent initiatives in the UK and beyond that aim to bring the interests of future generations explicitly into policymaking and governance.
